Won't trashing competitors hurt me?

Yes — that's why this skill explicitly avoids it. The 'when to choose them instead' paragraph is the highest-trust component of these pages and is the reason they outrank competitor-bashing pages from your competitors.

Does Google penalize comparison pages?

No. They're high-intent navigation queries. The HCU only penalizes thin / regurgitated /vs pages. Substantive ones with real differentiator detail rank well.
